County Treasurer, Kurt Albers, has announced that the 2022 payable 2023 real estate tax statements have been mailed to the taxpayers of Iroquois County. The first installment is due August 18th, 2023 and the second installment is due September 18th, 2023. After the due dates a 1 ½ percent penalty must be added each month it remains unpaid, according to Illinois State Statutes. All mortgage companies are still required to pay all real estate tax bills by the designated due dates and ONLINE. Taxpayers must include their tax bill when paying.



The Treasurer’s Office is open 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.



To avoid waiting in line, you may also pay by mail or at any bank in Iroquois County including Iroquois Federal, Commonwealth Credit Union, the First State Bank of Forrest in Onarga, etc.



Taxpayers paying in person at the Treasurer’s Office or at the local banks should bring the entire bill if they would like a receipt.&nbsp; Upon payment, the appropriate stub of the bill will be removed and then the date will be stamped on the back of the remaining part of the tax bill.&nbsp; If you mail your payment and wish to have a receipt, you must enclose the entire bill plus a self-addressed stamped envelope.



Remember that a drop box has been installed at the Administrative Center near the 911 Center so that taxpayers can drop off their payments during non-office hours.



Credit/Debit card payments and E-checks will be accepted with additional fees. To pay online please visit iroquoisil.devnetwedge.com. Information printed from this site should not be used in lieu of a tax bill.&nbsp;IF YOU USE THIS AS A TAX BILL, YOU MUST REMIT A $5.00 DUPLICATE BILL FEE, OR YOU WILL BE BILLED FOR THE FEE.



Members of any United States Armed Forces Reserve Unit can defer their real estate tax payment until 180 days after they return from active duty.&nbsp; This option is available if you are called to active duty for deployment outside the continental United States and if you are on active duty on the due date of any installment of taxes.

As we enter the busy holiday season, the Iroquois County Public Health Department is promoting important food safety practices by encouraging residents to follow some simple tips to avoid foodborne illnesses, such as&nbsp;Salmonella, E. coli,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Campylobacter.



According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 31 pathogens known to cause foodborne illness. Every year there are an estimated 48 million cases of illness, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths in the United States due to foodborne diseases. Symptoms can vary depending on the illness, but some common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea. It is difficult to say with certainty which microbe is causing a given illness without laboratory testing.



The following simple precautions should always be followed by cooks and food service workers to reduce the possibility of anyone becoming sick:



Separate:&nbsp;Use a separate cutting board for cooked foods and raw foods and always wash them after use. Do not cut raw vegetables on the same cutting board as raw meat. Avoid cross contamination. Wash any utensil after preparing one food item before going on to the next item.



Clean:&nbsp;Always wash hands before touching any food. Wash hands and surfaces often during food preparation and afterward.



Cook:&nbsp;Make sure all meats are thoroughly cooked by using a meat thermometer: turkey, stuffing, and other poultry to 165°F; whole cut veal, beef, and lamb roasts to 145°F; and ground meats including pork and beef and egg dishes to 155°F.



Chill:&nbsp;Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within two hours. The refrigerator should be maintained at 41°F or lower and the freezer should be at 0°F or lower. Keep hot foods hot, 135°F or hotter, and cold foods cold, 41°F or below. Never defrost food at room temperature. Thaw food in the refrigerator, in a cold-water bath, or in the microwave. When using a microwave, meat must be cooked immediately after. Marinate foods in the refrigerator.

The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout will take place on Thursday, November 16, 2023.&nbsp; The goal of the event is to set aside a day to help smokers quit smoking or using tobacco products for at least one day with the hope that they will quit for good.



According to the Iroquois County Public Health Department, “Many smokers attempt to quit a number of times before they actually achieve quitting.”&nbsp; When a smoker calls the Quitline, they will speak with a medical professional who will assist them in their quit attempt.&nbsp; The medical professional will assist the caller by designing a quit program that meets the needs of the caller.



The idea of the Great American Smokeout began in 1971 when Arthur Mullaney, a Massachusetts resident, asked people to give up smoking for a day and to donate the money they would have spent on tobacco to a local high school.&nbsp; Others started promoting different variations of the ideas until the California chapter of the American Cancer Society encouraged nearly one million smokers to quit for the day on November 18, 1976.&nbsp; With the success achieved in California, the American Cancer Society took the event nationwide in 1977.&nbsp; The Smokeout occurs every year on the third Thursday of November.



The American Cancer Society encourages quitting by providing smokers with information that will help them gain an understanding of the positive physical changes that will occur once they quit.&nbsp;

<li>20 minutes after quitting – your heart rate and blood pressure drop</li>



<li>12 hours after quitting – the amount of carbon monoxide in your blood drops to normal</li>



<li>2 weeks – 3 months after quitting – circulation improves and lung function increases</li>



<li>1 month to 9 months after quitting – your coughing and shortness of breath decrease</li>



<li>1 year after quitting – your risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker’s</li>



<li>2-5 years after quitting – your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker’s</li>



<li>10 years after quitting – your lung cancer death rate is half that of a smoker’s. Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decreases</li>



<li>15 years after quitting – your risk of heart disease is that of a non-smoker’s</li>
</ul>

THE COUNTY TREASURER’S OFFICE WILL BE OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, FROM 8:30 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M. FOR THE COLLECTION OF TAXES, AND TO ASSIST THE TAXPAYERS WITH ANY QUESTIONS THAT THEY MAY HAVE.&nbsp; THE LAST DAY TO PAY TAX BILLS BEFORE TAX SALE WILL BE END OF DAY DECEMBER 6, 2023.



AFTER THE DELINQUENT DATE, 1 ½ PERCENT INTEREST ON FARMLAND, RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL MUST BE CHARGED PER MONTH ON THE SECOND INSTALLMENT ACCORDING TO ILLINOIS STATE STATUTE.&nbsp;



NO PERSONAL CHECKS OR DEBIT/CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER END OF DAY NOVEMBER 3, 2023



THE TAX SALE WILL BE HELD ON DECEMBER 7, 2023 AT 9:00 A.M. AT THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATIVE CENTER.



THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER AS A TAX BUYER WILL BE END OF DAY MONDAY DECEMBER 4, 2023.
