JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Solid Waste Coordinator

Department/Location: Solid Waste

Reports to: Iroquois County Board

FLSA Status: Part-Time Hourly Non-Exempt

Prepared Date:  August 2026

General Purpose of the Position: With general direction, performs responsible consultative and promotional work in planning, organizing, and conducting and executing comprehensive solid waste education plan throughout Iroquois County; interprets, to community, professional, and lay groups, the plans and objectives of various solid waste activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop an education plan for waste reduction and recycling.
  2. Perform community outreach and education.
  3. Provide technical assistance on waste reduction and recycling methods and assist and advise the County Board in the event a landfill siting application is filed.
  4. Review County operations and recommend methods for waste reduction and recycling.
  5. Assist in the implementation of a county wide recycling program, including e-waste.  Coordination of bid solicitation and negotiation of private contracts for collecting recyclables.
  6. Maintain data on recycling programs to document compliance with State law.
  7. Coordinate waste recycling activities between municipalities and county.
  8. Monitor solid waste disposal sites in accordance with approved protocols.
  9. Investigate complaints of improper solid waste handling and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies.
  10. This will be a part-time position under the supervision and direction of the Health Committee of the Iroquois County Board.
  11. Have valid driver's license, proof of insurance per the Iroquois County Authorization for Background Checks policy and be able to provide his or her own transportation (mileage reimbursement provided).  Coordinator will be willing to travel locally.  Also required is the physical ability to enter all areas of landfills and other sites where complaints could be made and inspections required.
  12. Willing to attend Health Committee meetings and other meetings at the direction of the Health Committee.
  13. Must obtain necessary certifications.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Education and Experience
    1. High School Diploma or GED with one year of experience in this field.
    1. Strong working knowledge of Federal and State guidelines.

    • Requires ability to conduct education programs.
    • Requires ability to establish and further cooperative working relationships with local groups and agencies.
    • Requires ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to prepare grants applications and obtain grants.  Conduct educational programs and landfill inspections.

Computer Equipment and Software Requirements:

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Office, Excel, Word, Outlook, office facsimile and document imaging technology.
  2. Able to type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.

  3. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however at times may exceed the moderate level.
  4. While performing the duties of the job, employee should expect different environments at landfill sites, outdoor inspections and other outside duties, as needed.
